Yesterday marked my first day back in school for interior design- so exciting! This isn’t my first exposure to the field; I will be my family’s third generation designer. My grandfather still runs a small design studio near Los Angeles (he’s in his 80′s!) and my mother took design courses at The University of Chicago. While cleaning out some of her things last week, I found all of her old textbooks. Oh my goodness are they dated! I did find the section titled, “The 10 Guideposts of Interior Design” very interesting, and this is my attempt at trying to modernize these principles. Enjoy!
Color
(Don’t be afraid!)
Line and Form
(Add a variety of both)
Unity
(Everything should work as a unit)
Emphasis
(As in the fireplace)
Texture
(Mix up surfaces)
Proportion
(Pieces fit the space)
Balance
(Even it out)
Scale
(Pieces should be of similar size, but not exact)
Harmony
(That finished feeling)
Rhythm
(Make the eye move)
